Andrzej Partum, 36 30 92, Łódź, 1990

A record of Andrzej Partum’s action 36 30 92 from 1990, on the grounds of the Old Cemetery on ul. Ogrodowa in Łódź.

In the action 36 30 92 Partum gives expression to his existential reflections. Wandering through the Old Cemetery with Józef Robakowski (behind the camera), he recites the poem “Frequencies from Description” (“Frekwencje z opisu”) from his debut volume of poetry with the same title. Passing graves and mausoleums, the artist executes a verbal performance, looping the verses so that with each repetition they become increasingly abstract. In his poetry, Partum smashed semantic and grammatical structures. While believing in the value of art that is not squeezed into the boundaries of comprehension, he did not resort to irrationalism. He described reality with linguistic experiments. “Frequencies from Description” reveals Partum’s thoughts on the loneliness of the individual, passing, and death permeating all. The artist’s metaphor for a person was a hanged figure whose twisting would in time swing it like a pendulum into annihilation
