Ewa Zarzycka, Alphabet (Alfabet), Biuro Wystaw Artystycznych, Koszalin, 1990

A record of Ewa Zarzycka’s performance Alphabet from 1990 at BWA Koszalin, one of three performances during the Videoperformance festival (Cinematography Museum and Galeria Wschodnia in Łódź, BWA Koszalin, and the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw).

Zarzycka begins her performance with a brief speech to the audience in which she announces that her action will fulfil the promise for performance inherent in the subject matter. She limits the alphabet in the title to the letter O, which becomes the subject of her performance. Depending on the context the O character is sometimes identified not only as a letter, but also as a circle or zero. The artist pronounces the character, traces it in the air with gestures, draws it with chalk, and repeats it numerous times on the concrete floor of the gallery. To create a series of letters she uses natural materials: dirt, leaves, water, brick, grass, straw, stones, boards, sticks, clay, string. Zarzycka mixes these materials with water, models them with her hands, uses a palette knife and a saw. This results in the creation of a number of objects which the artist ultimately scrapes together with a shovel to form a mound.
