Zbigniew Warpechowski, Dirty Water (Brudna woda) (fragment), Galeria Wschodnia, Łódź, 1992

A recording of Zbigniew Warpechowski’s performance Dirty Water from 1992 at Galeria Wschodnia in Łódź.

Dirty Water is one of a number of performance pieces by Warpechowski involving fish, alongside Dialogue with a Fish, Autopsy, Draw, Private Lesson, and Dead Poetry. This action was repeated by the artist several times, including at the Edge festival in London in 1988. Apart from a tray containing the titular murky liquid, Dirty Water involves an installation from brick, glass and styrofoam, a hook, and a fake papier-mâché head. In the tray, the fish is connected to the artist by a fishing line so that when he approaches the tray, he pulls the fish out of the dirty water. The action at Galeria Wschodnia is an example of performance by an artist who used expression of the body undergoing extreme tests, and submitted to self-harm in the name of authenticity.
